what SAFER is for

SAFER’s Company Snapshot is FMCSA’s free public view of carrier identity and census fields: legal name, address, phone, USDOT, equipment counts, and related flags. You can search by USDOT, MC/MX, or name.

SAFER was not designed as a broker team workspace. It does not monitor approved carriers for you, parse a COI against the legal name on file, or keep shared lookup history for a busy desk.

what L&I is for (and why both matter)

Licensing & Insurance is the system of record for operating authority, BMC insurance filings, and BOC-3 process agents. When SAFER/census and L&I disagree on authority or insurance, believe L&I.

A clean SAFER page with Inactive authority on L&I is not a bookable carrier. Verifreta’s report is the first look — the filing check still happens on L&I.

where Verifreta fits

Use Verifreta when you want the census identity on one readable page before you send a rate confirmation, then monitoring and COI checks after approval. Free DOT, MC, and name tools handle the ungated first look.

DIY SAFER is still correct work. Verifreta is the desk layer so the whole team sees the same first look and can re-check before the next dispatch without starting from a forwarded PDF.

Verifreta vs DIY tabs

SAFER alone: free, authoritative census page, no team history.

SAFER + L&I by hand: correct federal workflow; slow when the inbox is full.

Verifreta Desk ($49/mo): same federal sources, one report format, monitoring + COI after you approve, shared seats.

  • Free tools = ungated first look.
  • Desk trial = save the carrier and watch for filing/contact changes.
  • L&I remains the filing record either way.

SAFER vs Verifreta at a glance

SAFER is FMCSA’s census snapshot. Verifreta is a broker desk layer on public census data. Licensing & Insurance stays the filing record either way.

desk checklist

  • Look up the USDOT or MC (Verifreta or SAFER) and copy legal name + phone.
  • Open L&I — Active property authority, BOC-3, required BMC filing.
  • Match rate-con name and entity type to the federal record.
  • Call the census telephone before you cover a first-time MC.

fail closed

  • Booking from SAFER alone without L&I.
  • Treating any tool green-light as cargo insurance.
  • Skipping the census callback because the email cell “works better.”
