Confirm authority and BI&PD on L&I before you book.

start free trial · MC vs DOT

MC is not a USDOT number

A rate confirmation that says “MC 1515” is a docket. A confirmation that says “DOT 44110” is a census identity. Use this tool for dockets. Use DOT lookup for USDOT numbers.

Bare digits in an email are ambiguous. Prefix MC when it is a docket. If you guess wrong, you will pull a different company’s record. Do not book from a guess.

When the thread only gives a company name, use carrier name search last — after you have tried to get a number from the carrier’s office.

what this report shows

  • Legal name and DBA (if listed) tied to the docket you entered
  • USDOT linked to that authority record when FMCSA lists one
  • Census telephone and physical address on the linked USDOT when available
  • Flags and fleet counts from the census snapshot on that company

Resolving a docket to a name is the first look — not the booking decision. Authority type, status, BOC-3, and BMC filings live on Licensing & Insurance.

what a docket grant is

For-hire interstate transportation of property usually needs an MC docket with Active common or contract authority. MX is a Mexico-domiciled docket. FF is freight forwarder. Neither is a substitute for U.S. motor-carrier property authority on an ordinary interstate van load unless that is actually the operation you are booking.

Broker of property is a different grant. A company can hold both. Read the type and status on Licensing & Insurance. If the only Active line is Broker, they are not the hauler on your rate con.

still confirm on Licensing & Insurance

Before you cover, open L&I for the docket and check:

  1. Authority type and status — property common or property contract Active for this interstate lane. Broker-only is not motor-carrier authority.
  2. BOC-3 — process agents on file (49 CFR Part 366). Missing or rejected → do not cover on a promise.
  3. BI&PD filing — usually BMC-91 / BMC-91X (or BMC-82 trust in lieu). Read amount, insurer, and any cancellation effective before pickup.
  4. Pending cancellations — a COI in your inbox is not the FMCSA filing.

When SAFER / census and L&I disagree on authority or insurance, believe L&I. Write which system you opened and the time.

one company, both numbers

The MC on the rate confirmation and the USDOT in the email must belong to the same legal name. If they do not, you are looking at two entities. Do not stitch them. Cover only after one legal name owns both identifiers.

desk sequence (docket on the rate con)

  1. Run the MC, MX, or FF docket here. Copy legal name, USDOT, and census phone.
  2. Open L&I. Confirm Active motor-carrier property authority, BOC-3, and required BI&PD.
  3. Match legal name (or listed DBA), DOT, and MC on the rate confirmation — including Inc vs LLC.
  4. Call the census telephone, not the cell in the email signature.
  5. Save dated screens with the load file.

Stop when a step fails. An Active BMC-91 does not repair a broker-only docket.

common mix-ups

  • Pasting MC digits into DOT lookup — Use this page for dockets; use DOT lookup for USDOT.
  • Treating “found” as Active authority — A resolved docket still needs an Active property line on L&I for your lane.
  • Booking because the MC matches but the legal name does not — Entity type and punctuation matter. Inc and LLC are different persons.
  • Using MX or FF when you booked a U.S. van linehaul — Read the grant type on L&I; do not assume every docket is motor-carrier property authority.

worked desk: MC resolves, broker-only on L&I

Thread: “MC 987654, pick up Dallas 08:00.” Lookup shows North Star Freight LLC, USDOT on the record, landline in Texas.

L&I shows Active Broker of Property — no Active common or contract motor-carrier line for property.

They may arrange transportation. They are not the motor carrier on your rate confirmation unless your contract says otherwise. Do not send a rate con naming them as the hauler. Get the actual carrier’s DOT and MC or stop.

fail closed

Do not cover when:

  • Docket not found after you verified prefix and digits — check SAFER and L&I; do not guess.
  • Legal name or entity type does not match the rate confirmation or W-9.
  • L&I is not Active for property motor-carrier authority on this lane.
  • Only broker or freight-forwarder authority is Active for the role you are booking.
  • BOC-3 missing or rejected.
  • Required BI&PD filing missing, or cancellation effective before pickup.
  • Census phone reaches a different company or nobody who will state the DOT and MC.

what this tool is not

Not proof of cargo insurance. Not a safety rating. Not SMS percentiles. Not confirmation the email sender works for that legal entity. Not a substitute for Licensing & Insurance.

Verifreta does not replace SAFER or L&I. It puts the docket resolution and census snapshot where you can read them before you book.

common questions

What is an MC number on a rate confirmation?

It is usually an FMCSA docket number (MC for U.S. motor carriers, MX for Mexico-domiciled, FF for freight forwarders). It links to a legal name and USDOT in FMCSA data — not a substitute for confirming Active authority on Licensing & Insurance.

MC not found — what should a broker do?

Check the prefix (MC vs MX vs FF), re-read the rate con, and open SAFER and L&I directly. New grants can lag. Do not book from a load-board badge or a guessed digit swap.

Can a company have Active broker authority but not motor-carrier authority?

Yes. Broker of property is a different grant. If the only Active line on L&I is broker (or freight forwarder), they are not the motor carrier on your rate confirmation for an ordinary interstate van load.

Does an Active docket mean insurance is current?

No. Check BMC-91/91X (or trust in lieu) and any pending cancellation effective before pickup on L&I. A COI in email is not the filing record.
