Most issues are a number type mix-up, or FMCSA has no record for the digits you entered.
if lookup fails
- not found — there is no census record for that DOT or docket. Check the prefix (MC vs DOT) and try SAFER. New authority can lag.
- unavailable — FMCSA did not return a record this time. Retry, then use SAFER and Licensing & Insurance directly. Do not book from a load-board badge.
DOT vs MC
Unprefixed digits on DOT lookup are a USDOT number. Prefix MC, MX, or FF for a docket. Pasting MC digits into USDOT lookup is the usual miss. Use the MC tool for dockets.
Name search returns a list. Pick the row. If two rows look alike, get a number from the carrier’s office instead of guessing.
