TN desk
tennessee carrier desk.
Look up the USDOT or MC before you cover TN miles. Tennessee OS/OW is TDOT. I-40 construction is a route, not cargo class. Tennessee IRP/IFTA is Revenue. Interstate filings stay on L&I. Federal BI&PD is still L&I — 49 CFR 387.9 did not raise $750,000 in 2026. We do not publish a made-up carrier count for Tennessee.

FMCSA vs Tennessee
An Active FMCSA property MC is interstate operating authority. It is not a Tennessee oversize permit, not IRP, not IFTA, and not intrastate authority. If this load never leaves Tennessee, ask whether they have the state credential — and still match legal name on L&I if an MC is on the rate con.
As of September 2026, table 1 to 49 CFR 387.9 still lists $750,000, $1,000,000, and $5,000,000. The January 16, 2026 change is broker/freight-forwarder BMC-84/85 at $75,000 — your house, not the truck. The March 2026 FMCSA notice still says: do not buy or sell a USDOT or MC outside a real corporate deal.
UCR is a separate annual filing. It is not BMC-91 and not a TN OS/OW permit. Confirm UCR on the national UCR site if your process requires it. Then come back to L&I for the truck.
Tennessee permits and credentials
Tennessee OS/OW is TDOT. I-40 construction is a route, not cargo class.
Tennessee IRP/IFTA is Revenue. Interstate filings stay on L&I.
Ask the carrier which legal entity holds the TN permit. If the permit is in a different LLC than the rate con, you do not have a carrier. Screenshot the permit with the load file. A verbal “we’re permitted in Tennessee” is not the portal.
first-touch in Tennessee
- Does legal name, USDOT, and MC on the rate con match L&I — including Inc versus LLC — for this Tennessee cover?
- Did you call the census telephone on SAFER, not the cell in the email?
- If this shipment is over legal in Tennessee, is there a current TDOT Oversize/Overweight Permits permit for these dimensions and this route?
- If they claim a leased truck, is that a Part 376 equipment lease — or a story that they bought the MC?
- A Memphis drop can be Arkansas or Mississippi miles. Get the right state permit.
- A Nashville load-board tag is not TDOT OS/OW.
